THE FACTORY SECONDS BRASS TRIO consists of Jack Sutte, Trumpet, Jesse McCormick, Horn, and Richard Stout, Trombone. Each occupies the Second Chair position in their respective section with The Cleveland Orchestra, and all are faculty members at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory. Established in 2013, the group brings a distinctive voice into brass chamber music.
The trio has performed in settings from concert halls to warehouses: from churches to restaurants and bars. They have been presented on local and regional chamber music series and as guests at universities across the United States. The trio has twice appeared as featured soloists at Carnegie Hall, including appearing with the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Transcribing and performing a continually growing body of early music and seeking out collaborations with composers have been two key areas of focus for FSBT. Factory Seconds has premiered numerous works by a range of composers including David Loeb, Clint Needham, Norman Sherman and Robert Pound. Esin Gunduz and Matthew Barbier have written pieces for electronics and the trio. Upcoming premiers include works by Joel Love, Paul Rudy, and Jesse Jones.
Factory Seconds Brass Trio has numerous recording credits. A Centaur release, Distant Carillons, contains music of David Loeb for trio and piano, with pianist Christina Dahl. Additionally, the group has an upcoming release of American music as well as a subsequent release of European trio music. Future recording plans include early music, music of JS Bach, and recordings of the new works the trio has premiered.
The trio is also involved in the community through outreach programs and presenting family programs. Factory Seconds always includes educational outreach in its tours, and has worked with high school and junior high school students in many states. The trio has presented interactive concerts for young children in its Musical Passports series, including The Art Of Poulenc, a musical story told with children’s art.
JACK SUTTE
Trumpeter Jack Sutte joined The Cleveland Orchestra as second trumpet in 1999. Prior to his Cleveland appointment, he was the principal trumpet in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in Norway. He made his international solo debut in Argentina in 1995 and has performed as a soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, Symphony in C, New World Symphony, Contemporary Youth Orchestra and CityMusic Cleveland, among others. Two highlights include world premiere performances of Clint Needham’s trumpet concerto “Fractured Elements” and Matthias Pintscher’s “Chute d’etoiles” for orchestra and two solo trumpets. A native of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, he attended the Curtis Institute of Music and then The Juilliard School for his masters degree. Mr. Sutte’s teachers include Dr. Patricia Backhaus, Frank Kaderabek, Raymond Mase and Chris Gekker. A proponent of contemporary music, Jack has released two CD’s, Beyond the Moon, featuring previously unrecorded music for trumpet and piano, and Fanfare Alone, a unique collection of fanfares and solo pieces for unaccompanied trumpet. Mr. Sutte is a Schilke Performing Artist.
JESSE MCCORMICK
Jesse McCormick was appointed to the horn section of The Cleveland Orchestra in 2006. He previously served three seasons with the Colorado Symphony, and two seasons as a member of the Denver Brass. On New Year’s Eve 2013, Mr. McCormick appeared on the nationally-televised PBS series Live from Lincoln Center, performing as guest associate principal horn with the New York Philharmonic. In 2005, he took top prize in the Professional Division at the International Horn Competition of America. He has also made solo appearances with the Denver Brass, Windworks Ensemble in Capetown (South Africa), and the Chamber Orchestra of Colorado Springs. Jesse McCormick has been a member of the faculty at Baldwin Wallace University since 2007. He has also lectured at the Cleveland Institute of Music and with Case Western Reserve University. In recent years, Mr. McCormick has appeared as a clinician at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, University of Denver, University of Florida, Florida State University, and University of Miami. He has also taught masterclasses in South Korea, South Africa, and Colombia. Jesse McCormick began his studies with Sally Ann Wilson in Colorado Springs, Colorado and completed his studies with Jerome Ashby at the Juilliard School.
RICHARD STOUT
Trombonist Richard Stout has a distinguished performing career both through his position as second trombone with The Cleveland Orchestra as well as through his many solo and chamber music projects. A member of The Cleveland Orchestra since 2000, Stout also performs on the bass trumpet and the euphonium when works call for those instruments. In addition to his orchestral career, Stout performs a wide range of chamber works and has performed solo recitals and concertos across the United States. In 2011 Rick released a CD of fantasy pieces for trombone and piano on the Albany label titled “Decreasing Radius,” on which he performs with pianist Christina Dahl. Prior to joining The Cleveland Orchestra, Stout held positions with the Jacksonville Symphony, the New Haven Symphony and the North Carolina Symphony, and for 12 years he taught at the Eastern Music Festival. Mr. Stout studied at Rice University and at The Curtis Institute of Music with Glenn Dodson, and now serves on the faculty at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music.
